Bears GM Ryan Poles Vividly Remembers What Robert Griffin III Said About Caleb Williams: ‘Pisses me off’

Frankly speaking, Ryan Poles of the Chicago Bears is not the biggest fan of Robert Griffin III—at least not when it comes to giving QB prospect Caleb Williams advice.

Bears GM Ryan Poles Vividly Remembers What Robert Griffin III Said About Caleb Williams: ‘Pisses me off’

Griffin previously said that if the Bears choose Williams with the first overall choice in the 2024 NFL Draft, he should decline to play for the team, as highlighted by Vincent Parise of USA Today’s Bears Wire.

Poles clarified that he was offended by Griffin’s comments during an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday. The GM is committed to establishing a completely different culture in Chicago.

“It pisses me off a little bit, to be honest with you, because we were hired to break a cycle,” Poles said during an appearance on the Pat McAfee Show when asked about Griffin’s comments regarding Williams and the Bears. “… I really believe we’re about to break this cycle and get this city in a really good situation and win a lot of games.”

The consensus No. 1 pick, Williams, should “pull an Eli Manning” and tell the Bears he won’t play for them if they use the first pick in the draft on him, according to a video that former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Griffin posted on social media earlier this month. This is especially because Chicago traded quarterback Justin Fields to the Steelers for only a conditional 2025 sixth-round pick.

“I really believe we’re about to break this cycle and get this city in a really good situation and win a lot of games. So the past is the past. I don’t worry about that at all. It’s about where we’re going.”

Griffin said he thought Poles was “having an amazing off-season” — up until the Fields trade.

“After everything that has happened with Justin Fields, can Caleb Williams really look at that and say, ‘This is an organization that has my best interest in mind, they’re going to develop me into the player that I want to become?’” Griffin asked.

Nevertheless, Williams would enter a very different scenario than Fields and the majority of other No. 1 choices in NFL history.

Chicago signed D’Andre Swift and Keenan Allen this summer and finished the 2023 season with a 5-3 record.

Swift, Allen, DJ Moore, Cole Kmet, and maybe the player the front office selects with the No. 9 overall choice will all be playmakers for Williams, who will also be supported by a young offensive line that has several pillars.

Additionally, it is a far cry from Fields’ circumstances in his first two years, when Chicago sacked its head coach, gave him few effective weapons, and essentially dismantled the squad in order to focus on the future.

What happened to Caleb Williams?

After two successful seasons, quarterback Caleb Williams, who won the Heisman Trophy, has officially entered the NFL draft and left Southern California. Williams revealed his much-awaited news on social media on Monday, the last day for freshmen to sign up for the draft.

How much has Caleb Williams made in NIL?

Quarterback Caleb Williams has reportedly made $10 million in the NIL era already. Two of the most well-known sponsors that helped him reach that amount are Wendy’s and Dr. Pepper.

Why is Caleb Williams the number 1 pick?

FOX Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt recently called Williams a “generational talent,” lauding him for his ability to control the game from the pocket, his arm talent, movement and creation, being a threat as a runner and his understanding of schematics.
